Song You Need: Neggy Gemmy’s “Beep Beep” is like “Vroom Vroom” on quaaludes
A little treat from Neggy Gemmy ahead of this August’s Electronicon3.
The FADER's "Songs You Need" are the tracks we can't stop playing. Check back every day for new music and follow along on our Spotify playlist.
Vaporwave doyenne Neggy Gemmy — formerly known as Negative Gemini, real name Lindsey French — has returned with “Beep Beep”. Her first new song of the year, “Beep Beep” is the follow-up to last year’s sublime, dirgey ballad “California”, and it sees French trying a dead-behind-the-eyes take on fizzy, surrealist hyperpop. Pulling threads of piano house and chiptune into French’s heady, washed-out world, the track’s insistent, deadpan chorus of “Beep beep, get out of my way” gives the whole thing a kind of “‘Vroom Vroom’ on quaaludes” feel — and enjoyably so!
“Beep Beep” arrives ahead of Electronicon3, the third instalment of the festival run by 100% Electronica, the vaporwave label founded by French and her husband George Clanton. French and Clanton are set to perform at the event, taking place this August at Brooklyn’s Knockdown Center, alongside Saint Pepsi, Cowgirl Clue, Pictureplane, Caroline Loveglow, and more.
