Earlier this year, Mozzy signed with Yo Gotti’s CMG Records, the first of a string of signings that also includes Jacksonville’s Lil Poppa and others that’ve added to an already hefty roster. It was an interesting move, given that Mozzy has been navigating the industry as an independent artist for years with success. Shortly after his signing he dropped “Real Ones” with Roddy Ricch, and now he’s back with another song, “Tell the Truth.”
On paper, Mozzy and Shordie Shordie sound like a perfectly serviceable duo. Mozzy is no slouch when it comes to hooks, though the Sacramento rapper’s time-hardened street tales become uncannily catchy when the Baltimore crooner steps in for an assist. “Tell The Truth” is built on top of a prowling string loop and lurching bassline that veer toward some kind of G-Funk lullaby, but when the kick drums land with a pummeling thump-thump-thump, the beat jumps out, practically begging for someone to flinch. “When it get brackin’ it get drastic, that’s an easy call,” Mozzy shrugs. “Ran in the house to lock the door after he seen my dawg.”
