Pusha-T has revealed what happened to his Madlib-produced album.
Back in March 2020, the rapper told fans during a Discord AMA session that he was working with Madlib, which was something he later described as a “bucket list thing.”
“We’re taking our time. I’m crafting and writing to some of them,” Pusha previously told KAZI Magazine. “That’s a bucket list thing for me. The fact that we’re in contact and everything is good, I see that happening. I can’t put a date on it, but I’m definitely on it.”
However, the album never ended up surfacing, leaving many wondering whether or not the project was still a thing. But now, Pusha is finally giving us the scoop.
As part of promoting his latest album, It’s Almost Dry, the star launched a new live radio show called “It’s Almost Dry Radio” via Amp. For the debut episode, Pusha was joined by manager Steven Victor and Idea Generation’s Noah Callahan-Bever, during which the Madlib was brought up.
According to Pusha, he was “definitely going to work with Madlib,” and even “got some beats” and “chops from him.”
“I just think he’s really dope at finding ill sounds and ill chops, and things of that nature,” he said. “But at the same time, it was feeling like a beat tape situation.”
After all, Pusha explained that he felt like he had to “step it up” from 2018’s Daytona, which was “just beats and hard raps.”
“I wasn’t produced,” he said of the record. “The structure of Kanye West you know, taking these things out or whatever the case may be. Honestly, it was just that.”
He added, “‘It’s Almost Dry’ is an exercise, definitely on the Pharrell side, in being produced.”
It’s Almost Dry was released this past Friday, April 22. Entirely produced by Pharrell and Ye, the record features singles like “Diet Coke,” as well as guest spots from artists including Kid Cudi, Lil Uzi Vert, and Jay-Z, amongst others. Meanwhile, Madlib has continued to release a string of singles and perform under his MadGibbs project with Freddie Gibbs.
