David Bowie's estate have confirmed the first details of Moonage Daydream, a documentary film created from archive material of the late star including unseen footage. The film, due for theatrical release in 2023 and set to stream on HBO Max, will be directed by Brett Morgen (Kurt Cobain doc Montage of Heck) who Variety reports was given "unfiltered access" to Bowie's archives.
Reports of Morgen's work on the film, which is titled after a song on Bowie's Ziggy Stardust, was first reported last year. It is believed that the director is close to completing work on what is described as a "cinematic odyssey" mixing documentary and concert film formats.
A press release describes it as “a project that shows how Bowie himself worked across several disciplines, not just music and film but also dance, painting, sculpture, video and audio collage, screenwriting, acting and live theatre.”
Moonage Daydream marks the first time since Bowie's death in 2016 that his estate has licensed music for a movie. Bowie’s longtime collaborator and producer Tony Visconti worked on the music for the film.
