Zatoichi is a long-running Japanese media franchise following the adventures of a blind samurai. Because there are few things as cool as someone who can't see that's slicing the shit out of the sighted, Denzel Curry has wisely tapped the Zatoichi series for inspiration in his new song featuring slowthai and its music video.
Sophia Gaspard plays the Zatoichi role while Curry's her apprentice, studying under picturesque yet grueling conditions in a lush jungle. The montage of fighting and training sequences is a perfect fit for the song's soulful rave stylings, a mixture of drum and bass, percussion ripped from AraabMuzik's MPC, dreamy vocal melodies, and Curry's leadership-focused bars.
“I like traditional hip hop," Curry said of his upcoming album Melt My Eyez See Your Future, out soon. "I like drum and bass, I like trap, I like poetry, so a lot of that is going to be interwoven in this album including jazz and a lot of genres that I came up on as a kid and just being in my parents’ house. This album is made up of everything that I couldn't give you on TA13OO or Imperial because I was going through depression anger issues.”
Curry announced Melt My Eyez See Your Future in January. No release date is yet announced, but you can hear its first single "Walkin" right now.
