Last year, Chaz Bear promised that his long-running, beloved project Toro y Moi would return in 2022 with a new album. That project is called MAHAL, and it's out April 29 via Dead Oceans.
Today's announcement also comes with music videos for the new songs "Postman" and "Magazine" featuring Salami Rose Joe Louis. "Postman" taps Chaz Bear's love of all things funk with a joyful cut in the tradition of Parliament, while "Magazine" sails through the dark times in a yacht made of groovy psychedelic rock tropes. For the "Postman" music video, Chaz embarks on a trippy search for mail in a party bus; "Magazine" is a slideshow/collage of retro signal processing, test patterns, and extremely fly outfits. Watch them both below.
MAHAL will feature appearances from Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Sofie Royer, and the Mattson 2. "I wanted to make a record that featured more musicians on it than any other record of mine,” Chaz Bear said in a press release. “To have them live on that record feels grounded, bringing a communal perspective to the table.”
