Dutch-Iranian singer-songwriter Sevdaliza first came across our radar in 2017 in the lead-up to her debut album ISON. Since then she's shared the similarly-acclaimed projects The Calling and Shabrang co-produced with her longtime collaborator Mucky and released on her own label Twisted Elegance. Known for her gothic, trip-hop inspired textures and embrace of so-called "artificial" signal processing, Sevdaliza returns today with "High Above," her first new single of 2022.
The new song parts the clouds just a little, letting the sunlight peek through in the form of a driving acoustic drum set – something of a departure for Sevdaliza. The track drives through a dubby mist reminiscent of The xx as Sevdaliza sings of a connection. Her voice is so sultry it's hard not to imagine romance as a driving force, though her solitary nature is always in the background Oh, I wanna go low with you," she sings, "Even though I know I'm high alone / Oh, I wanna go low with you / Even though I'll die alone." "High Alone" appears on the upcoming EP Raving Dhalia, out on February 25.
