Cat Power has confirmed details of a covers album, due for release in 2022. The album, aptly titled Covers, is due on January 14 via Domino Records. Today's announcement comes with two of the cover versions, Frank Ocean's "Bad Religion" and "A Pair of Brown Eyes" by The Pogues. Check out both of those below.
In addition to those covers, the album also features renditions of songs by Nick Cave, Billie Holiday, Iggy Pop, The Replacements, are more. There is also a new version of her own song “Hate” from 2006's The Greatest, retitled “Unhate.”
In a statement, Chan Marshall explained that her take on “Bad Religion” began when she was struggling to perform her own song "In Your Face" on tour: “That song was bringing me down,” she said. “So I started pulling out lyrics from ‘Bad Religion’ and singing those instead of getting super depressed. Performing covers is a very enjoyable way to do something that feels natural to me when it comes to making music.”
Covers is the first album from Cat Power since 2018's Wanderer. She has released two covers albums before, 2008's Jukebox and The Covers Record in 2000.
