South African producer-turned-artist Muzi has shared his fourth album Interblaktic, a genre-bending journey into Afrofuturism and beyond. With previously released singles including the title track, "Come Duze" featuring Sho Madjozi and "I Know It" produced by Kaytranada, the project blends elements of South African house, Zulu folk music, gqom, and other local genres including local genres like Maskandi, Kwaito, and Isicathamiya
"I knew I wanted to make an album that would pay homage to my upbringing and my past, but also talk about my aspirations," he told FADER. "And since I love like space, and travel and I read a lot about like galaxies and black holes and all these things, I thought it would be like really cool to sort of merge how proud I am of my Africanness with my otherworldly aspects."
Despite creating a forward-thinking project, Muzi looked to past ideas of the future for further inspiration. "It's obviously inspired by Sun-Ra and Earth, Wind and Fire, and that sort of era where people were just like, really, really crazy about like, Afrofuturism," he explained. "I wanted to sort of just like, bring it all back into the present moment."
