It's been a minute since Mahalia dropped 2019 album Love and Compromise but the U.K. star has kept her fans fed with a steady drip of new material, including recent Rico Nasty collab "Jealous." Today she returns alongside AJ Tracey with new song "Roadside," complete with a fun video in which she wreaks revenge on a no-good ex.
Setting the scene for her vengeance, Mahalia sings about a boy who's "got me hurting, I feel it in my chest." Confused and questioning herself amid the whiplash effect of a sudden break-up, Mahalia pours her heart out from behind the counter at a greasy burger joint where grey meats and food poisoning are the dish of the day all the while clutching a baseball bat. Oh and the customer is her old flame who she's tied up. No spoilers but let's just say his car doesn't escape untouched.
Speaking to The FADER via email, Mahalia said: “I’ve kinda been excited about releasing this one since I started writing it. Fresh out of a breakup, I made this one with The Elements and two of my favourite girls and songwriters Abby (Absolutely) and Kamille. We had so much fun writing and making this together. Getting AJ on it was the cherry on top for me. I’ve wanted to work with him forever and I was so happy that it could be on this tune. I hope you love it!”
