Lexus and The FADER present 25/8: How Duckwrth stays in perpetual motion

This is how Jared Lee goes all in.

February 04, 2021

Duckwrth — the pseudonym of rapper and songwriter Jared Lee — is tapping back into himself as an artist. Every moment of his career thus far led to his major label debut SuperGood, an LP he describes as a celebration “of the wondrous black music that molded me into an artist and the black women that made me a king.” The album arrived late last summer, during one of the least convenient times in modern history to put out a body of work. He’s not sweating it, though. “2020 taught me how to be patient, and work with the tools you have, because you don’t have the same access,” he says.

Now still in the throes of a pandemic with no determinate end, he faces the new pressure of using his abundance of time in a way that’s productive. For Lee, that means absorbing in his creative path. “Everybody has their different superpower,” he tells The FADER. “Mine is being able to take what’s happening around my environment and transmit it from one form to the other. That’s the gospel of hip-hop, taking something that already exists and bringing it to something new.”

In our second episode of our new series created in partnership with Lexus, 25/8, Lee welcomes us into his home and discusses writer’s block, incorporating graphic design into his work, how he stays in motion during a stagnant time, and how he keeps going all-in even when he feels tapped out. Peep the full episode above, and stay tuned for more from 25/8 sponsored by Lexus and the new Lexus IS — all in on the sport sedan.
