Indie-folk singer-songwriter Kevin Morby dropped Oh My God in 2019, an album that was written, he told us last year, as fires swept through California and uncertainty was the world's only guiding star. Today, as fires sweep through California and uncertainty is the world's only guiding star, Morby has announced a new album called Sundowner and shared "Campfire," its first song and video. The visuals for the breezy and romantic track take place in the desert, where a be-denimed Morby plays the guitar and catches a ride from his real-life partner, Katie Crutchfield of Waxahatchee.
Sundowner is out October 16. The album was recorded in Kansas City, Morby's hometown, and was inspired in part by a Four Track Tascam model 424 used in the album's creation. "Sundowner is my attempt to put the Middle American twilight — its beauty profound, though not always immediate — into sound," Morby said in a statement. "It is a depiction of isolation. Of the past. Of an uncertain future. Of provisions. Of an omen. Of a dead deer. Of an icon. Of a Los Angeles themed hotel in rural Kansas. Of billowing campfires, a mermaid and a highway lined in rabbit fur. It is a depiction of the nervous feeling that comes with the sky’s proud announcement that another day will be soon coming to a close as the pink light recedes and the street lamps and house lights suddenly click on."
