A pandemic-era MTV Video Music Awards ceremony took place last night in a surprisingly seamless fashion, with host Keke Palmer ably providing the glue to hold everything together. Much of the fanfare of the evening was devoted to Lady Gaga, an artist who has historically out-crazied the ordinarily-quite-bonkers VMAs at every turn, from her masked archival Alexander McQueen outfit in 2009 to 2010's notorious meat dress to her 2011 performance of "You and I" in boy drag. This year, she once again delivered, performing a masked-up medley of Chromatica tracks, including fan-favorite "911" and early single "Stupid Love," the latter of which she performed at a piano shaped as a brain. Ariana Grande also joined Gaga mid-medley to perform their collaboration "Rain On Me." At other points in the evening, fans were treated to performances from BTS, DaBaby, The Weeknd, Miley Cyrus, Doja Cat, Chloe X Halle, and more.
