Watch Moses Sumney’s NPR Tiny Desk (Home) Concert
Three songs from his new album græ and a track from 2018 were performed.
Moses Sumney is the latest artist to turn in a Tiny Desk Concert for NPR filmed remotely from his home, and it might be the best one yet to be released during the onslaught of COVID-19.
Three songs from Sumney's recent album græ get solo renditions: “Bless Me,” “Me in 20 Years,” and “Polly." It's understandable if you missed græ when it was released given it looked like the world might be ending, though Sumney thinks the songs are perfect for our current moment. "All of the songs are about lonliness and isolation," Sumney said of græ, "so who's laughing now?"
The performance is concluded with an absolutely splendid performance of "Rank and File" from Sumney's 2018 EP Black in Deep Red, 2014. The only instruments used are a loop pedal and Sumney himself, providing vocals and clapping out percussion. It's really quite a stirring thing. Before performing, Sumney gave a nod to the ongoing Black Lives Matter protests. "This song is dedicated to the protestors, and the rioters, and to George Floyd, and to Black lives, which matter."
