Mong Tong 夢東’s “Jou-tau” has been beamed in from another dimension

A trip.

You've never heard of Hom Yu and Jiun Chi, the Taiwanese brothers who record as Mong Tong 夢東, and joining them on Instagram for a deep dive into the history of Taiwanese occultist literature won't reveal too much about them as people either. But one listen through to their transcendental new album Mystery 秘神 — due out June 19 via Guruguru Brain — should push you so far out of this reality that you won't care. It's a combination of heavy psych, boogie, and doom, with video game synths and even chintzy 電子琴音樂, or "relaxing Chinese synth pop," buried beneath the buzz. "Jou-tau," premiering above, is as good an introduction to the album as you could reasonably hope for, opening with a foreboding sample and tripping into skittish exotica. It's best to hear it while staring at the Mystery 秘神 artwork below, which is among the best album covers you'll see all year. Take a look at that below, and stream "Jou-tau" at the top of the page.
