The Recording Academy has officially fired suspended CEO Deborah Dugan over allegations that she verbally abused a female colleague. The announcement comes a matter of weeks after Dugan was first suspended and, in retaliation, filed a 44-page legal complaint alleging a work culture rife with sexual harassment, corruption, and racial discrimination. In the complaint, she also accused former Grammys CEO Neil Portnow of raping a female recording artist.
Per The Guardian, the board of the Recording Academy commissioned two “exhaustive” independent investigations into Dugan, and came to the conclusion that she should be relieved from her duties. Dugan’s lawyers call the decision to fire her “despicable,” and claim that the decision points towards the culture of misogyny that Dugan alleges is entrenched in the Academy.
