Les Amazones D’Afriques share the healing power of “Love”

Les Amazones D’Afriques, a supergroup founded by Malian musicians Mamani Keïta, Oumou Sangaré and Mariam Doumbia which now includes female artists from all across the continent, recently shared the video for the single, "Love."

The powerful song sees the group, lead on this track by Keïta, call out the practice of female genital mutilation and demanding its end. In the black and white clip, live performances are blended with behind-the-scenes footage. The harmful practice is legally banned in 26 of the 29 countries where it is traditionally practiced. Unfortunately, Mail is one of the counties with no current law banning the practice in place, according to justice organization Equality Now.

"This amusement does not mask the violence, Today is not a day of celebration," the lyrics, sung in Bambara, blare across the song's pulsing electronic production. "The woman deserves respect."
