David Lynch finally received an Academy Award this weekend after decades of gonzo and often controversial filmmaking. And, true to form, he didn’t really seem to care all that much. During Sunday night’s Governors Awards — an intimate, untelevised ceremony that awards lifetime achievement in the film industry — the Twin Peaks mastermind and director of Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive was presented with an award by his frequent collaborators Kyle MacLachlan, Laura Dern, and Isabella Rossellini, only to offer a two sentence speech. Per Vanity Fair, Lynch told the audience: “To the Academy and everyone who helped me along the way, thanks,” before looking at his Oscar statue and telling it that it “[had] a very nice face.” Gotta admire the man’s consistency.
