On Tuesday the nominations for this year's Latin Grammy Awards were announced ahead of a November 14 ceremony in Las Vegas. There were nominations for a number reggaeton/ urbano artists, including Bad Bunny, Daddy Yankee, Sech, and Ozuna in the genre categories. However, since the announcement was made, a handful of artists have spoken out against the Latin Grammys for not nominating artists from the genre in major categories such as Record, Album, or Song of the Year.
“Without reggaeton, there’s no Latin Grammys,” is the message posted on Instagram by artists such as Nicky Jam, Natti Natasha, Karol G, J Balvin. Writing on his Instagram, Balvin stated that the protest is “for the culture and the movement.”
Daddy Yankee is one of the artists who is nominated for a Latin Grammy, in the best urban/fusion category for “Con Calma” featuring Snow. He too, however, is concerned with the list of nominations. “Despite being nominated, I don't agree with the way they treated the genre and a lot of my colleagues," he wrote, "Remember one very important thing: Their platform was not the one that created this movement. This goes beyond a prize. This is culture, credibility, relevance, and RESPECT.”
Spanish artist Alejandro Sanz is this year’s most nominated artist with 8 nods. Rosalía is behind him with 5, including Album of the Year for El Mal Querer.
