Variety is reporting that Issa Rae, creator, star and writer of HBO series Insecure, is developing a "reimagining" of 1996 crime thriller Set It Off. Rae is producing the film, and plans to star in it; it will be written by Insecure writer Syreeta Singleton and Star writer Nina Gloster. The original film was directed by F. Gary Gray and starred Vivica A. Fox, Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Kimberly Elise. Montrel McKay will produce alongside Rae.
Earlier this year, Rae starred alongside Marsai Martin and Regina Hall in the film Little. She continues to star in Insecure; next year, she will appear in romantic comedies The Photograph, alongside Lakeith Stanfield, and The Lovebirds, alongside Kumail Nanjiani.
