Uncut Gems, the new film from Josh and Benny Safdie, features a just-above-cameo appearance from The Weeknd, who plays a version of himself in the crime drama. The film premiered last night at the Toronto International Film Festival, and Abel Tesfaye graced the red carpet with what I assume to be a very expensive suit and 10-dollar mustache.
Just look at it. It seems like something he pulled off of a Toxic Tik Tok user covering one of his songs. Tesfaye's image has always looked far more luxurious than the sleazeball persona he cultivates in his music (all that ~mystery~ probably has something to do with it) but for this era, he's dipped a single toe into the waters and come out looking like a producer on his way to reboot Deepthroat. All I have to say is "Godspeed." It's genuinely exciting to see a black pop star and style icon of his magnitude flirt so effectively with trashiness. Let's see if he takes it anywhere else.
