Last week, one-time NFL critic JAY-Z announced that he had signed on to be the league’s new “live music and social justice consultant,” an appointment that has… ruffled some feathers, to say the least. Most critics of the partnership have voiced disapproval at the fact that JAY-Z has previously supported Colin Kaepernick, the former 49ers quarterback who has been blackballed by the NFL for making on-field political statements. A small minority, including Cardi B and Freddie Gibbs, has supported JAY-Z, with Cardi saying that she believes he could bring Kaepernick back to the NFL. JAY-Z, naturally, has defended the deal, saying it’s “the next thing” needed to bring about social change after Kaepernick’s initial protests of the league.

Now, Kaepernick’s attorney Mark Geragos — the man who, notably, defended Michael Jackson, Chris Brown and Jussie Smollett in court — has told ABC News that the JAY-Z/NFL partnership “crosses the intellectual picket line,” and that JAY-Z, who he referred to as “cold-blooded,” made no effort to speak to Kaepernick before signing the deal. “The deal was already done prior to any conversation that [Kaepernick] had with JAY-Z,” Geragos told the station, “And he certainly didn’t have any conversations with the NFL.” Read ABC News’ full report here.
