This morning, multiple publications reported that former One Direction star Harry Styles was close to being locked in for the lead role of Prince Eric in Disney’s upcoming live-action Little Mermaid update, featuring Grown-ish star Halle Bailey as Ariel and Melissa McCarthy as Ursula. As it turns out, these reports were entirely false — The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Styles, who has acted in Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk, has turned the role down. We here at The FADER are, of course, devastated. It is unknown who will now be stepping into the film’s lead male role. Styles was also recently in consideration for the lead in Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis biopic; he lost the role to The Carrie Diaries’ Austin Butler.
