Jermaine Dupri sat down with People earlier this week to chat about his work with Da Brat back in the 90s. While he was nothing but complimentary of Da Brat, saying that she “broke the mold for female rappers," he was less than complimentary of the current generation of women emcees. When asked about the new wave of female identifying rappers — namely Cardi B, Nicki Minaj and Megan Thee Stallion — Dupri couldn't name even one that he respects, saying:
"I feel like they all are rapping about the same thing, and I don’t think they’re showing us who’s the best rapper. For me, it’s like strippers rapping. As far as rap goes, I’m not getting who is the best rapper. I’m getting OK, you got a story about you dancing in the club, you got a story about you dancing in the club, you got a story about you dancing in the club. OK. All right. Cool. Who’s going to be the rapper?… At some point, somebody’s going to have to break out of that mold and talk about other things."
Cardi B caught wind of Dupri's comment and justifiably hit back at him over an Instagram video. "First of all I rap about my pussy because she's my best friend. Second of all, it seems like that's what people wanna hear," Cardi says in the clip. "When I did 'Be Careful' people were talking mad shit at the beginning. If that's not what people wanna hear, then I'm gonna start rapping about my pussy again." She goes on to point out that a number of female emcees that don't focus on sex in their lyrics — Tierra Whack, Kamaiyah, Rapsody and CHIKA — don't get enough mainstream recognition.
