Last week, the New York Times broke news that Universal Music Group had covered up a large vault fire that destroyed master recordings of hundreds of culturally and commercially significant artists. In the original piece, around 100 artists were named; now, the Times has published a full list of over 700 artists who suffered losses in the fires. The list includes a bevy of extremely significant artists including Beck, Mary J. Blige, Blink-182, Weezer, Cher, Eminem, Nelly Furtado, Janet Jackson, Tupac, Snoop Dogg, Joni Mitchell, and more. It is currently unknown as to how much of these artists’ catalogues was lost in the fire.
The Times follow-up piece also includes correspondence with Courtney Love, who told reporter Jody Rosen: “No one knows for sure yet, specifically what is gone from their estate, their catalog. But for once in a horrible way people believe me about the state of the music business which I would not wish on my worst enemy. Our culture has been devastated, meanwhile UMG is online with cookie recipes and pop, as if nothing happened. It’s so horrible.”
