This Friday, Jamila Woods will release her sophomore album LEGACY! LEGACY!. Each track on the record is named after a black cultural icon, from Zora Neale Hurston to Jean-Michel Basquiat. Ahead of the full project, Woods is sharing one last single, "BALDWIN." The song grapples with existing in predominantly white spaces, a recurring theme throughout author James Baldwin's oeuvre. Nico Segal guests on the track, adding flourishing trumpet to the warm, empowering production.
"'BALDWIN' is a song inspired by the work of James Baldwin, particularly the 'Letter To My Nephew' in his book The Fire Next Time," Woods wrote in a press release. "He had an incredible ability to speak about whiteness in a way that was hard-hitting and nuanced, and delivered some of the most elegant reads to white America, providing me a lens to think about how I see whiteness at work in my world today."
