D'Angelo's tumultuous career and triumphant comeback as a titan of modern soul is covered in the upcoming documentary Devil’s Pie: D’Angelo. The film, directed by Carine Bijlsma, premiered last weekend at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival, and on Monday the trailer was revealed. Watch it above via Pitchfork.
"Who leaves the scene for 14 years and comes back?" a voice asks at the trailer's beginning, a reference to D'Angelo's troubled hiatus from music after the release of his sophomore album Voodoo in 2000. Devil's Pie: D'Angelo will cover this period, which included D'Angelo's struggle with addiction, deaths in the family, and a serious car accident. Viewers will also go behind-the-scenes for D'Angelo's return for the 2014 album Black Messiah and 2015 tour "Second Coming."
D'Angelo is currently at work on a new album. In 2019 he shared a new song "Unshaken" as part of the Red Dead Redemption II soundtrack.
