There's a really good chance that, if you are a follower of the DMV rap scene, you've turned up to production by Cheecho on quite a few occasions. The D.C. native is largely responsible for the spooky, menacing, and bouncy sound that has become associated with acts from the area like Goonew, Q Da Fool, and Yung Manny — which is the perfect foundation for the Hoodrich Pablo Juan-inspired flow that's taken off around The District for the past five years. When we spoke to him last year, he said that on top of the heavy piano play and creepy undertones to his production, much of his sound (specifically the drum patterns) is inspired by D.C. go-go — a genre that's been facing the threat of being silenced from outdoor play recently.
Today The FADER is sharing a 28-minute mix by Cheecho that best displays his skillset as a producer and a rapper, which he's been sharing more of over the past six months or so. The mix features unreleased tracks from DMV artists he frequently collaborates with like Big GG$M and Schlish, as well as one by Cheecho himself. The rest is comprised of never-before-heard instrumentals which, at times, follow his typical formula. At other instances, Cheecho delves into the more delicate and spacey corners of trap. "I was going for a more smooth trap sound with this mix," Cheecho said over email. "I want people to be able to ride around and crank.“ Take a listen below.
