YG confirms new album release date at Coachella
The rapper also paid tribute to “Black Jesus” Nipsey Hussle at the festival.
YG appeared at Coachella, or, to use his parlance, Boachella, on Sunday in a performance dedicated to the late Nipsey Hussle. The rapper's mid-afternoon set only happened because, he told the audience, "I’ve been drinking tequila." Prior to that, he said, he "couldn’t get out of bed" as he struggled to come to terms with the loss.
“We lost one of the greats. A legend. Black Jesus — yeah, I said it,” the Los Angeles Times quotes YG as saying. The rapper performed wearing a black vest adorned with an image of Nipsey while at one point a cartoon image of the late rapper floating up to heaven (where he was greeted by Tupac) was shown on the screens.
YG previously said that he delayed the release of a surprise album in order to mourn his friend. That album, he told the Coachella crowd, will now come out on May 3. A song titled "Stop Snitchin'" from the album was debuted during the set.
A memorial event for Nipsey Hussle was held in Los Angeles on April 11. YG was among those who spoke during the event, while tributes came from Barack Obama and Jay-Z among others. The rapper was shot dead outside the clothing store he owned on March 31.
