A vigil held for the late Nipsey Hussle ended abruptly on Monday night with multiple injuries reported by CNN and confirmed by the LAPD. The memorial service took place at the site of Nipsey's death, the South Los Angeles clothing store he owned and helped run.
19 people were hospitalized following the vigil, two of whom CNN report are in a critical condition. One person was injured in a collision with a car. Two more have reported serious injuries while the majority were treated for "trample injuries." A police spokesperson also clarified that an officer was injured.
At least one person was detained by LAPD for disorderly conduct. Reports suggest rocks and bottles were thrown at the authorities attempting to clear the area. It is unknown what caused the stampede, though at one point 300 people were reportedly running from the site of the vigil.
"We understand the community is mourning and we feel your loss," the police said in a statement. "We are asking for everyone to follow the officers directions and disperse from the immediate area."
Nipsey was shot dead outside his Marathon Clothing store in Los Angeles on Sunday. Police have named 29-year-old Eric Holder as the main suspect in the shooting.
Tributes to the rapper came from artists including Rihanna, Drake, Chance The Rapper, Kendrick, Beyoncé, Cardi B, and more.
