Listen to a new FADER Mix by Jasmine Infiniti

The longstanding FADER Mix series presents new, exclusive DJ mixes from our favorite artists and producers.

Over email, New York-based DJ and producer Jasmine Infiniti shared a few of her sonic influences, one of them being "a reconstructed ballroom beat, r&b undertones, and somber vibes but making it techno!" That's the kind of energy you can expect on her just-announced EP SiS, out September 26th via Oakland's Club Chai. In sound and sentiment, it's "a commentary on the state of black trans women in this country and the world writ large," she explained. "The community and camaraderie that I have personally observed in my life."

In anticipation of SiS, Infiniti's cooked up a diabolical FADER Mix, featuring 53 minutes of throbbing drums, supernatural r&b flips, and lose-your-mind breakdowns that will have you plotting on your next big rave night out. What do you imagine people doing while listening to this mix?

I imagine someone voguing the house down boots! I like to think that you can vogue to anything if you a real one. But also tripping balls on LSD and just enjoying the auditory journey.

Is there a track in particular that stands out? Why?

The first mash-up of tracks I think stand out. It’s an original track they’d unreleased called "Bxtchslap V2" mixed with a track produced by Black Cracker for Ashus called “In It Innit” based in Berlin. It’s a weird mashup at first but then it really kind of gets this melodic thing going on that I really like. And the lyrics are so dope. I’m loving all the woke femme narratives in music lately.

What music or artists do you turn to for inspiration when you're working on projects of your own?

Honestly I feel like I’ve been channeling artists like Burial, LSDXOXO, and Questionmarc. I love a reconstructed ballroom beat, r&b undertones, and somber vibes but making it techno!

Your upcoming EP is titled SiS, which is pretty evocative. Why did you choose to give it that name?

I toyed around with several different ideas for a name. I wanted to make a commentary on the state of black trans women in this country and the world writ large; the community and camaraderie that I have personally observed in my life. SiS is referring to my community of trans sisters and the trials and tribulations we endure. It’s also an homage to a legend of the Chinese Goddess Quan Yin, who is herself trans and lived a life of suffering but is thought to be incarnated in every trans woman suggesting that each of us are her, and goddesses in our own right, and through our suffering we gain strength. I mean, this is my own interpretation of her story but I welcome any corrections.

Where do you see it fitting into the current cultural landscape?

Sis as a current trans (and queer) colloquialism to refer to ourselves, is trending hard at the moment. I thought it would be fitting and relevant. It’s a term helping to build community and putting a feminine spin on generally masculine salutations like bro or dude. It’s empowering and I feel so lucky to have lived to see this shift in culture and to be among many representing and benefitting from this new cultural landscape.
