Madonna took the stage on Monday night, dressed a black gown and a large collection of necklaces, and proceeded to give a lengthy speech about her start in music and how she sang "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" at her first audition. She reserved an extremely short section of her speech to actually talk about Aretha Franklin's life and legacy. Those watching at home noticed how little care seemed to be payed to the Queen of Soul.

Madonna’s tribute to Aretha Franklin is Madonna telling a story about herself while acknowledging she loved the “Lady Soul” album. #VMAs

How was that a tribute to #ArethaFranklin @MTV @vmas when it was story all about @Madonna with a two second mention of #Aretha. This a travesty if I ever saw one. The nerve and the audacity of all the people behind the scenes of this production and network. pic.twitter.com/XpthRHRW9W
