CW's Supergirl, starring Melissa Benoist, will feature a transgender superhero for the show's fourth season. Nicole Maines, herself a trans activist and actress, will star as Nia Nal / Dreamer. Entertainment Weekly reported that her role will be the first-ever transgender superhero on television. The news was revealed during Comic-Con and Maines shared that she wished there had been a trans superhero on television when she was a child.
"It’s such an important issue right now in our society and in the world," said Maines during the Supergirl panel at Comic-Con. "And so it seems only fitting that we have a trans superhero for trans kids to look up to."
"We've had trans representation on television for a while but it hasn't been the right representation," says Nicole Maines, who will play TV's first trans superhero on #Supergirl https://t.co/xsvh5qAJZ3 pic.twitter.com/P9BVkbUY96
