Things are never going to stop being weird in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana. The teaser trailer for Netflix's third season of Stranger Things doubles as a commercial announcing the opening of the Starcourt Mall, and it continues the classic 80s nostalgia the show has nailed over its previous seasons. Joe Keery returns as Steve Harrington, and actress Maya Hawke makes her debut as the new character Robin, both dressed in sailor garb as employees of a quintessentially corny ice cream shop, Scoops Ahoy.
The trailer takes us back to the heyday of mall dominance, featuring traditional mall activities like hanging out in the foodcourt and teenagers gleefully flocking into a Claire's store. The throwback feeling of Stranger Things has also taken a hold on fashion as brands tap into nostalgia for advertising campaigns. Earlier this year, Spanish footwear company Camper recreated an 80s school picture day for their spring drop, while Helmut Lang found inspiration in dating shows of the era for their pre-fall collection. With a warped yearning for "simpler times" on all fronts, an uptick in 80s-inspired campaigns could be on its way.
