Daye Jack’s “Heart Shaped Culdesac” video is a Truman Show-inspired ode to suburbia
What if your life was just a movie set?
Atlanta rapper and songwriter Daye Jack dropped off his first single from his upcoming sophomore album Black To The Culdesac a couple weeks ago. Titled "Heart Shaped Culdesac," the breezy, hip-hop/pop ode to his neighborhood was written after he moved back to his childhood home of Duluth, Georgia following a two-year stint in Los Angeles. "To stay home means you'll never have to face the world," Jack sings on the infectious hook, contemplating the comforts and trappings of idyllic suburbia.
Today, Jack is debuting the track's accompanying video, which takes on a similar, lovingly critical tone with its Truman Show-inspired plot line and comic-style text commentary. "The video is about transitioning from being the kid to finding your adult self," Jack wrote via email. "It’s also about hoping more minority and immigrant kids get to experience life with a “safety net” — where failing isn’t a fear but just a part of growing up. On a set, the drama and the risks are all pre-planned for the overall good of the movie. This video, to me, is knowing you have to look at life from that same angle." Check it out below.
