Husalah is one of the most underrated rappers of the 21st century. In his native Bay Area, though, he's been acknowledged as a legend; as a member of the Mob Figaz, and in his mid-aughts solo work, Hus pioneered a freewheeling mob style, just as likely to be heard philosophizing about spirituality as he is recounting stories of being a fugitive from the law. His career was stalled by a five-year stint in federal prison on drug charges, and, following his release in 2009, he maintained a low profile, popping up for the occasional show but rarely releasing music.
Last year, he returned with two new singles, "M.O.B." and the Sade-sampling "Protect Your Soul," the video for which is premiering on The FADER today. Along with the new video, Husalah is announcing the release of a new album, entitled H, on April 6. "Me releasing this music and and short film is an altruistic act In the name of protocol and obligation; long live the underworld," Husalah told The FADER over email. "This is only a dark and informative tale of urban manifesto and love of self preservation, no more unordinary than guerrilla warfare, necessary and true as the American fabric of life.”
