When Ava DuVernay tweets that history is in the making, everyone pays attention. As a legendary and historic filmmaker herself, it would have to be something truly incredible. And, as usual, Ava DuVernay did not disappoint. Netflix will premier The Cloverfield Paradox immediately after the Super Bowl.
The film will be lead by Elizabeth Debicki, Daniel Bruhl, Gugu Mbatha Raw, Chris O’Dowd, Ziyi Zhang and David Oyelowo. It was directed by Julius Onah, produced by JJ Abrams, and was written by Oren Uziel. This will be the first time a film of this magnitude will be rolled out in this fashion. Absolutely no promotional material was released before the Super Bowl reveal, which was a short promo trailer that can be seen above.
Such a big roll out was just as big of a deal as Ava predicted. Check out the responses below.
#FilmTwitter is going to explode tonight. Something is coming that I can hardly believe. Lawd. History in the making.

extremely excited for THE CLOVERFIELD PARADOX, directed by Nigerian-American Julius Onah. extremely unexcited they’re just dropping it tonight with absolutely no notice, after a 30 second trailer that didn’t even mention who’s in it or that it was dropping tonight

I’m gagged right now @Netflix. WOW. WOW. WOW. Just so we are clear, this is HUGE. Was already geeked that the next film in the #Cloverfield uni was led by a POC cast x black director. But it’s stunt arrival is a game changer that just adds to the excitement!!!! pic.twitter.com/Z3zXoj3ELw

Netflix putting Cloverfield Paradox out without any warning or prior promotion is the cinematic equivalent of Beyoncé releasing her self-titled album

Netflix got the rights to the third CLOVERFIELD movie, kept it a secret, dropped the FIRST LOOK during the super bowl and made a THEATRICAL RELEASE franchise stream immediately following the game. This is Netflix’s move to start killing theatres. GENIUS. It’s all I could dream of
