A statement from Netflix promises that show will cover various angles of creating in hip-hop, from “the artists’ lives with their families and friends, to sitting front row in the studio and grinding on tour, to experiencing the ecstatic power of moving the crowd.”

In his statement, Jenkins described hip-hop's journey from regional curio to global force, and the responsibility he feels towards the music. “Way back, when hip-hop culture was in its gestational phase, the powerful message therein didn’t go much further than the five boroughs of New York City. Today, rap music is the heartbeat of Mother Earth, and Netflix is the embodiment of the eyes from which she sees. We’ve been telling hip-hop stories since ’96, and as natives we feel it is our duty to do the movement justice. Rapture is bangin’. Straight up.”

Nas has another documentary in the pipeline: Nas: Live from the Kennedy Center, a concert film with the National Symphony Orchestra, premiering February 2 on PBS. Get to know T.I. better before Rapture's premiere with his episode of The FADER's Everything You Need To Know.
