Tony Kill’s slow-bounce bootleg of 24hrs’ “What You Like” is a bi-coastal blast
West coast energy with a go-go flip.
Tony Kill is an incredibly talented young producer from Washington, D.C., who released a groovily ambient LP entitled Thought Crimes late last year . A few months before that, he shared a brain-blasting, go-go-infused flip of Sampha’s “Under,” incorporating the sounds of his hometown.
Premiering today on The FADER is his take on 24hrs and Ty Dolla $ign’s “What You Like.” Featuring a sample chopped from D.C. go-go band TOB’s “Clap It,” Kill’s flip alternates between an upbeat bounce and a slowed-down rock. The effect feels almost like traveling through space, at the whim of the varying gravitational forces along the way.
The flip was "blended minutes before my flight to Seattle's International District for Luis Vela's hyper-dimensional exhibition We Tried, with intent to foster a portal between coasts equally nuanced in sound and style,” the producer said over email. “Supreme love and appreciation to the brilliant independent bands and artists from home and the Emerald City blending genres, navigating against norms."
