Since its inception in 1996, the MOBO [Music Of Black Origin] Awards has provided a vital alternative to mainstream music award ceremonies in the U.K. As founder Kanya King told The FADER in 2016, “MOBO defined a watershed moment in British culture when homegrown urban music was invisible to the mainstream. Its birth inspired a generation that had been excluded to dare to dream.” Not only that: it launched a thousand looks.
