SoundCloud’s New Documentary Explores The Other Side of Toronto’s Sound

“Our sort of music...is a little more jiggy.”

September 07, 2017

The music of Toronto has become one of its biggest global exports, but there's a quickly rising local sound that's a "little more jiggy" than the sleek, melancholic vibes of the city's most famous ambassadors like dvsn and The Weeknd. It's inside this community that SoundCloud sets the next episode in their SoundCloud Next Wave documentary series, "Northern Stars", which takes a good look at Toronto artists Harrison, a l l i e, Birthday Boy, and M.I. Blue.

Co-curated with The FADER, this episode's artists are a group of friends and collaborators who discovered each other on the cloud, but possess a sense of shared vision and support that is 100% local. "When I see someone new, especially someone dope, and they're from the city? I want to help them," explains Birthday Boy, while a l l i e describes the unifying appeal of her scene succinctly: "Everyone has this really soulful quality. And you can't fake that."
