André 3000 On Outkast: “If We Never Do Another Album I’m Totally Fine With That”

André 3000 recently collaborated with Tretorn for a new footwear collection to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Swedish sneaker brand's Nylite shoe. In an interview with Complex, the Atlanta icon sat down to discuss his inspirations for the collection and his current attitude towards creating music.

Speaking about the footwear collaboration with Tretorn, André said that he's been inspired, stylistically, by Young Thug, whose own style is often compared to his Atlanta predecessor's flamboyant looks. He’s exciting,” he said of Young Thug. “There’s no box. He’s all over the place. To do those things he does, you have to have big fuckin’ balls."

During the conversation, André 3000 said that he's more motivated by the collaborative processes of acting and fashion design, as opposed to making music. "I work better with other people," he said. "I clearly see that now. Like, I haven’t put out an album in years, but if Frank Ocean or Travis Scott calls and says, ‘Hey, man, I want you to be a part of this,’ it’s like I have a goal, a target. When I’m on my own, I’m sitting around twiddling my thumbs."

Despite this realization, he said that the thought of a new album with his oldest collaborator, Big Boi, still doesn't inspire him to get behind the mic. “It’s really just an excitement thing, and where I am in life," he explained. "I kind of like not being a part of [rap], now that I’ve done it...Even with Outkast — if we never do another album, I’m totally fine with that. When I was 25, I said I don’t want to be a 30-year-old rapper. I’m 42 now, and I feel more and more that way."
