In February, Jason Derulo teamed up with Nicki Minaj and Ty Dolla $ign for "Swalla," a sugary sweet pre-summer jam with a Caribbean flair. It's taken off nicely and on Thursday afternoon, Nicki teased a remix of the song on Instagram, writing, "I never do remixes for features & have never done an acoustic version for anything officially. When I tell u this shit right here is HARD AF!!!!!!!!!!!! This shit is a fkng VIBE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
The "after dark" remix of the song, which is premiering on The FADER tonight, is indeed a vibe — a much more grown one. The song's sunny rays have been replaced with a tight 808 and moody atmosphere. All three stars sound absolutely great.
In an email to The FADER, Jason Derulo explained the reasoning for the second version of the song. “It was so nice we had to do it twice!,” he said. “The original version is the ultimate club track, so the idea was to give people the flip side of the song. The subject matter and melody is so sexy, but you might miss the ‘sexy’ in all the fun of ‘Swalla.’ So, After Dark is on the opposite side of the spectrum and is SURE to set the mood.”
