NON Records Will Confront Colonialism With Global XCHANGE Events
The concert series and panel discussions begin June 2 in London.
NON Records will collaborate with Thirty Three Thirty Three for NON XCHANGE, a series of global concerts and panel discussions. The events, which will be held in London, Berlin, Cape Town and Johannesburg, hope to create "a borderless network for understanding, exchange and collaboration," according to a press release.
The first NON XCHANGE event takes place in London on June 2-3 at the ICA, and will feature performances from NON-affiliated artists Angel Ho, Faka, and Chino Amobi, who just released his debut album Paradiso. Practice, a new movie by Grace Wales Bonner, Harley Weir, and Dev Hynes, will have its world premiere. The experimental film follows a teenage ballet dancer Leroy Mokgatle growing up in the dance scene of Cape Town and Johannesburg.
On June 2, the ICA will host "Language, Symbolism, and Power," a panel with Juliana Huxtable, Professor Akwugo Emejulu, and filmmaker Kodwo Eshun in which "speakers will consider and reflect upon how artists can create social spaces that disrupt the flow of power." The following day's discussion is "Power Structures" with Farai Bukowski-Bouquet. It will investigate "the damaging power structures still present in experimental music, and the artists that confront, challenge and decohere the whiteness of noise and industrial genres."
"Through performance, discussion, and exhibitions, NON XCHANGE confronts spatial violence and systemic exclusion, forming a cultural dissent against the structural legacy of colonialism," the release reads.
