Photographer Edward Cushenberry Wants To Know What’s Going On Inside Your Head

His new project, “These Are The Moments That Keep Me Up At Night” is like eavesdropping on your best friend.

I started following the work of L.A.-based photographer and cartoonist Edward Cushenberry in 2013. It was the honesty of his work that caught my eye. Not afraid of Fluorescent lights or awkward angles, Cushenberry's photographs feel like real life. In his new body of work, “These Are The Moments That Keep Me Up At Night,” Cushenberry brings a dialogue begun by Nan Golden and Larry Clark into the 21st century. By turning his camera on his friends and loved ones, intimacy and life’s fragility are rendered in 35mm. He lays bare the joy and sorrow of everyday life through image and simple text.

"Every time I photograph someone I ask for a quote to accompany their picture," Cushenberry said about the project. "The more I shoot, the more I want to know about the lives of everyone who is close to me. Every night I go to bed wondering if what I shot and imagined in my head will match what is on my roll of film. I wonder how open everyone will be with me and what quotes of theirs I will use. This project has started to affect my sleep and my dreams. These are the moments that keep me up at night."
