Early Saturday morning, in the middle of a tweet session defending Attorney General Jeff Sessions, Trump sent out a series of bizarre tweets accusing Obama of wire tapping Trump Tower on election day "just before the victory" as well as "in October, just prior to Election."
Trump wrote: "Terrible! Just found out that Obama had my 'wires tapped' in Trump Tower just before the victory. Nothing found! This is McCarthyism." In other tweets later, Trump also compared the incident to Watergate. He also refers to Obama in one tweet as a "Bad (or Sick) guy!"
Ben Rhodes, Obama's former Deputy of National Security Advisor responded to the allegations writing: "No President can order a wiretap. Those restrictions were put in place to protect citizens from people like you."
So far the president has yet to provide any actual evidence on the wiretapping, though we'll keep you updated if anything surfaces.
See the tweets from Trump and Rhodes below and read a full report on the incident via Washington Post.
Update 3/4/2017 at 12:58 p.m: Buzzfeed is reporting that Obama spokesperson, Kevin Lewis, said the Trump allegations are "simply false" in a statement released Saturday.
A cardinal rule of the Obama Administration was that no White House official ever interfered with any independent investigation led by the Department of Justice. As part of that practice, neither President Obama nor any White House official ever ordered surveillance on any U.S. citizen. Any suggestion otherwise is simply false.
