Grime Didn’t Win Anything At The BRITs, And Twitter Isn’t Having It

Skepta lost to David Bowie and Rag'n’Bone Man.

February 22, 2017

Last year, the BRIT Awards was a little embarrassing. The all-white nominations were met with an online cry of #BRITsSoWhite, and here at The FADER, columnist Sian Anderson asked what it would take for the awards to finally recognize grime's success.

This year, it seemed the awards were listening. Ged Docherty, chairman of the BPI (who organize the BRITs) explained to The FADER how the voting academy was overhauled after 2016's ceremony, leading to a much more diverse list of nominees at the 2017 show. Unfortunately, grime artists Skepta, Stormzy, and Kano still left with no awards between them. The timeline couldn't help but notice that grime, while a big part of this year's ceremony, had still not been awarded. It seemed especially out-of-touch that Skepta — who was up for the year's most nominations, at three — lost two of his statues to David Bowie, who passed away in 2016. This is how Twitter reacted.
