Halima Aden Is The Yeezy Season 5 Model You Need To Know About
The 19-year-old Somali-American model rocked a hijab for her iconic NYFW debut.
The Yeezy Season 5 debut today was a minimal spectacle, rolling out pieces from Ye's new collection in 13-minutes, soundtracked by a looping The-Dream demo. Modeling those pieces was a cast of creatives and influencers that included Playboi Carti, Luka Sabbat, Amina Blue, and maybe most notably, Halima Aden.
Aden is a Somali-American model, who was born in a Kenyan refugee camp. In 2016, she made national news by competing in Minnesota's Miss USA pageant wearing a hijab, and a burkini during the swimsuit portion.
At 19, Halima's star is rising fast. She's just signed a deal with IMG Models, and she's featured in a spread from the tenth edition of former Vogue Paris editor Caroline Roitfield's CR Fashion Book. The article, accompanied by shots from Mario Sorrenti, bills her as "the first beauty pageant contestant to wear a hijab" and a "breakout star."
Apparently, she's now caught Kanye's attention too. She walked in a floor-length fur—and naturally, a hijab—at Season 5's NYFW debut today. "I signed with the top modeling agency in the WORLD and still wore my hijab as my crown," Aden wrote on Instagram after the show. "Don't ever change yourself...Change the game."
