Fifth-generation Australian musician Alex Knight, who records rock songs as Brightness, doesn't shy from the dark parts of his truth. Having moved to London in 2015 to pursue music, he found himself at a standstill, eventually escaping the city's grit to return to his roots in the rural town of Lake Macquarie. His forthcoming debut full-length, Teething, is what emerged when he pulled himself out of the darkness.
In his intimate-feeling video for "Oblivion," debuting above, Brightness shows us around his home, which is just a few hours north of Sydney. The montage was filmed over the course of a few days in the relentless heat, providing us with a glimpse of the place he returned to in order to make sense of the world around him.
In an email to The FADER, Brightness described the message behind the slyly catchy, half-strummed song. "'Oblivion' is about witnessing somebody mentally unravel and being unable to help them. I tried to steer the lyrics in a more optimistic direction, but they kept drifting toward the morbid and melancholy."
