Today, President Obama announced the recipients for the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The medal, considered the country's highest civilian honor, will go to a list of 21 honorees this year, and among them is the GOAT himself, Michael Jordan.
Also on the list are musical legends Diana Ross and Bruce Springsteen, actors and entertainers like Robert De Niro, Ellen Degeneres, Tom Hanks, and Cicely Tyson, and fellow hoop legend and activist Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. SNL creator Lorne Michaels, legendary architect Frank Gehry, and Bill and Melinda Gates all help round out the list as well.
The honor is presented by the President "to individuals who have made especially meritorious contributions," both cultural, philanthropic, political, or otherwise. Speaking on this year's class, Obama said, "It's a tribute to the idea that all of us, no matter where we come from, have the opportunity to change this country for the better. From scientists, philanthropists, and public servants to activists, athletes, and artists, these 21 individuals have helped push America forward, inspiring millions of people around the world along the way."
